past, present, future: code cracked

Okay, I want to write songs about this, and I am writing songs about this, but here it is in a nutshell, maybe no big deal to you, maybe totally obvious to you, and to everyone in the whole world but me, but for me this is something very nice to think about this way.

The present moment is fleeting. It's gone as you name it. The past is always up for interpretation because we can't go back, and no matter what, the past is something we conjure in our minds. We can write it down and call it history, but even the history books vary greatly, especially from country to country. So the past is a blur. The present immediately becomes the past. Every time you've bickered with someone in conversation and one of you says, "all I said was...." you are already rewriting the history of the conversation you're sitting there having in the present moment. So we don't have the present and we don't have the past. You don't have to see it this way, and you have my full understanding if you would like to say this is not how you see it.

My idea, anyway, is that at any given second in time we have free will to decided how we should best spend that moment. As long as we're not sick or incarcerated, we're free to make choices. We can stand right up and walk over to our boss' office door and open it up and say, "take this job and shove it, I ain't working here no more."

In any given second we have the freedom to wreak havoc. We have the freedom to help someone or hurt someone. We have the freedom to be part of the solution or part of the problem. We have the freedom to blow out our flip flop step on a pop top cut our heel and cruise on back home, and make ourselves another margarita in Margaritaville.

What shapes these minute by minute choices?

Morality, yes.

Kindness, compassion, yes.

But what about building something for the future you?

How do those choices happen?

How do you sit and write page after page intending to create a full length novel?

How do you write song after song intending to get out there and record them and sing them?

How do you paint those same water lilies over a hundred times, over a hundred different canvases?

I think it's that your dreams propel you forward.

I think the safest way to make your moment by moment decisions is by following your dreams.

The fantasy you have of yourself with a beautiful house and a beautiful wife? Follow it. A dream like that won't get you into trouble.

The fantasy of standing up and singing the songs you wrote at the Newport Folk Festival? Go for it. Go for it every single day.

A dream like that won't ever steer you wrong.

See what I mean?

Okay, that's all I got.

Follow your dream in the moment because it's all you've got anyway and it is the best scenario to deliver up the results you want in your life.
